In the Competitive Robotics class at Weld Central High School, we participate in the National Robotics League (NRL) of Colorado. This initiative offers a job-driven, project-based STEM learning experience developed by the Rocky Mountain Tooling and Machining Association (RMTMA) to address the critical challenge of recruiting a future workforce in the industry. The NRL Colorado builds upon the success of existing robotics programs in our community and establishes a direct connection to future careers in manufacturing.
Preparing for the competition requires hundreds of hours of skilled effort, beginning in August at the start of the school year. Students engage in activities such as CAD design, machining parts, welding, and electronics, all under the guidance of teachers and industry professionals from the manufacturing sector here in Colorado. Weld Central is proud to have the support of sponsors like Better Process, Schweitzer Engineering Labs, Rocky Mountain Waterjet, B&B Machining and Arnold Ag.
The students’ primary objective is to construct a Battlebot from scratch, aiming to compete against other high schools from across Colorado, with the ultimate goal of defeating their bots while ensuring the survival of their own. This year, the competition will take place on May 3rd at the Cherry Creek Innovation Center, where the Rebels will compete with their Weld Central-built robot, "The Dustpan." Attached is a video that highlights the journey of "The Dustpan," showcasing its evolution from a student idea to a fully functioning robot ready to engage in Robot Combat.
